South African Culture Series 1 - Afrikaners
In this new series I talk to South African individuals that love their culture, about what their culture means to them, their culture's myths, symbols, core values and heroes, the importance of their language, and the state of their culture in the 21st century. On this episode I discuss Afrikaner/Boer culture with Ruan Goosen.
Afrikaners or Boers are an Afrikaans speaking ethnic group in Southern Africa descended from predominantly Dutch, German and French settlers. The culture is distinct and it is a common misconception abroad that all white South Africans are Afrikaners or Boers. The three main origin myths of the Afrikaners are the Great Trek, the battle of Blood River and the Second Anglo-Boer War. There are about 2.7 million Afrikaners in South Africa.
